Kirindy Mitea
National Park
A remarkable crossroads of western and southern biodiversity — dry forests, spiny thickets, and coastal lagoons stretching 70 km south of Morondava.
About the Park
Dry forests, spiny thickets, and coastal lagoons
Located in the Menabe Region, approximately 70 km south of Morondava, Kirindy Mitea National Park occupies a rare ecological transition zone between the biodiversity of western and southern Madagascar. Dense dry forest covers 70% of the park, giving way to spiny thickets of Didiereaceae and Euphorbiaceae, and brackish coastal lagoons teeming with wildlife.
Originally incorporating part of the classified Marofihitra forest (established 1963), the park was created in December 1997 and its boundaries were revised in 2015. It holds the triple designation of National Park, RAMSAR Wetland Site, and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — a testament to its global ecological significance.
With 97% endemicity across its recorded species, Kirindy Mitea stands as one of Madagascar's most irreplaceable sanctuaries — a living laboratory found nowhere else on Earth.
Key Fauna & Flora
A landscape of rare endemics
The park’s extraordinary mosaic of dry forest, spiny desert, and wetland habitats sustains an exceptional concentration of endemic species. With 182 woody plant species including three baobab species, five rosewood species, and seven mangrove species, its flora is as diverse as its fauna.
Marked Circuits
Four trails through the dry forest
Four developed circuits departing from the park’s operational zones, ranging from a short 1.5 km forest walk to a 5 km coastal exploration.
