Anjozorobe Angavo
Harmonious Protected Landscape
A forest corridor of the Central Highlands — one of the last remnants of natural highland forest, sheltering the Indri indri and species found nowhere else on Earth.
About the protected area
A highland forest corridor, between two regions
The Anjozorobe Angavo Harmonious Protected Landscape encompasses the Anjozorobe–Angavo forest corridor, one of the last remnants of natural forest remaining on the Central Highlands. The corridor straddles the Analamanga and Alaotra Mangoro regions.
Management infrastructure includes an administrative office in Antananarivo and an operational office in Mandialaza. Tourist facilities comprise a lodge with ten fully equipped bungalows, a restaurant, and an ecoshop. Nine thematic circuits of 20 km border the lodge, and hiking trails cross the forest corridor throughout.
The Anjozorobe–Angavo forest corridor is one of the last surviving fragments of natural highland forest on Madagascar's Central Plateau — a refuge for the Indri indri and dozens of endemic species.

Fauna and Flora
Mid-altitude evergreen forest, rich in endemism
The site presents a mid-altitude evergreen forest with wetland zones dominated by Ocotea, Cryptocarya, Diospyros, Garcinia, and Weinmannia. The flora is composed of typical forest plants, notably orchids including Angraecum compactum.
Culture and Heritage
Sacred springs, ancestral rites and a changing landscape
The area attracts many migrants seeking new land, and the population of the region has grown considerably. Taboos against garlic, onion, and rum are widespread throughout the site. A sacred spring at Andreba serves as the setting for ancestral rites and ceremonies.
Slash-and-burn agriculture, pasture fires, boundary-marking fires, illegal logging, charcoal production, and poaching of wildlife together constitute the main pressures weighing on the protected area. Invasive plants including Psidia altissima and Lantana camara further threaten forest zones.
